My Big, Loud Voice
Hello. I am an Electric Guitar. Before I could sing out loud, I had a cousin who was very quiet. My cousin, the acoustic guitar, had a soft, sweet voice. When he would strum, it sounded like a gentle whisper. But when he played in a band with the big, booming drums and the shiny, loud trumpets, nobody could hear him. The drums would go BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. The trumpets would go TOOT, TOOT, TOOT. My poor cousin’s gentle strumming was lost in all the noise. He wanted to share his happy music with everyone, but he was just too quiet.
But then, some very clever friends had a wonderful idea in the 1930s. A man named George Beauchamp knew just what to do. He gave me special magnets that could feel my strings wiggle and dance. These magnets would listen to my quiet song. Then, he attached a long cord to me, like a tail, and plugged it into a big speaker box. This box was my new big voice. When my strings wiggled, my song traveled through the cord and came out of the box LOUD and clear. My first body was round and shiny, so people gave me a silly nickname. They called me the 'Frying Pan'. Can you believe it? I didn't cook pancakes, I cooked up happy, dancing music.
Now I had a big, strong voice. I could play with the loudest drums and the brightest trumpets, and everyone could hear me sing. I helped create a new kind of music that was full of energy. It was called rock and roll. It made people want to tap their feet, clap their hands, and dance all around. I loved watching everyone smile and wiggle when I played my songs. I still love sharing my big, happy voice with the world today, making music that makes your heart feel sunny and bright.
