I Am an Electric Kettle

Hello there. My name is Electric Kettle, and I love to help in the kitchen. Long, long ago, before I was around, making water hot was very slow. Grown-ups had to put a big pot on a fiery stove and wait, and wait, and wait. It took such a long time. But then, some clever people at a place called the Carpenter Electric Company had an idea on September 15th, 1891. They thought, what if we used a little bit of zippy, sparkly electricity to make water warm? That’s when I was born. I have a special secret inside me that makes me super fast. I can make water warm in a jiffy.

My first family members were a little slow, but they were trying their best. Then a very kind man named Arthur Leslie Large had a wonderful idea. He decided to put the little heater right inside my belly. Before, it was in a separate spot underneath me. Putting it inside the water made me so much faster. I could hum and start to get warm right away. But my best trick came later, from my good friends William Russell and Peter Hobbs. On October 22nd, 1955, they taught me magic. They showed me how to know when the water inside me is all bubbly and steamy. When it’s perfectly ready, I can turn myself off all by myself. I just go… CLICK. It’s my favorite sound because it means my job is done and something yummy is about to be made.

Now, I get to help families every single day. With my quick, warm water, you can make wonderful things. You can make warm, soupy oatmeal for breakfast or a cozy cup of hot chocolate with fluffy marshmallows. I love my job. It makes me feel so proud and happy to bring a little bit of warmth into your kitchen with just the push of a button and a happy little CLICK at the end. I love helping you have a warm and wonderful day.
