Your Friendly Fire Extinguisher

Hello there. I am a bright red fire extinguisher. I have a very important job. When a little fire starts, I help stop it. I keep it from getting big and scary. I am a safety helper, and I am here to protect you. I stand tall and wait, just in case you need me. It makes me feel proud to keep everyone safe and sound. I love being a helpful friend in your school and home.

Many, many years ago, a smart man had a bright idea. His name was Captain George William Manby. In the year 1818, he invented my great-great-great-grandparent. I was not red back then. I was a shiny copper tank, and I was filled with special water. When a fire started, swoosh. I would spray my water and put the fire 'to sleep.' Captain Manby knew I could help people stay safe from fires. He worked very hard to make me, and I was so excited to start my important job of helping others.

As time went on, more clever people helped me grow. They wanted to make me even better at my job of stopping fires. Sometimes, they fill me with something that looks like fizzy foam, like bubbles in a bathtub. This foam is great for putting out certain kinds of fires. Other times, I am filled with a cold, snowy cloud that cools everything down super fast. It is amazing how many ways I can help. I am always learning new tricks to fight fires and keep people from harm.

Today, you can see me waiting quietly in many places. I hang on the wall in your school, ready to help. I might be in the kitchen at your house, keeping watch while you cook yummy food. I am a patient safety helper. I do not get tired or sleepy. I am always, always ready to be a hero and keep you, your family, and your friends safe. I am here for you. Wave hello next time you see me. I will be happy to see you.
