The Story of the Frosty Friend

Hello. I am a freezer. Brrr. It’s so chilly and nice inside me. I hum a happy, quiet song all day long. Inside me is a winter wonderland. It is always snowy and frosty. This is where yummy treats love to live. Colorful popsicles sleep next to tubs of swirly, sweet ice cream. Little green peas and bright orange carrots rest here, too. They stay cold and happy. Long ago, before I was here, yummy ice cream would turn into a puddle. And tasty leftovers couldn't be saved for another day. It made people sad.

A very clever man named Clarence Birdseye made me. He was my very first friend. One day, he went on a big adventure to a place called the Arctic. It was super, super cold there, with ice and snow everywhere. He saw something amazing. The people there would catch fish and the icy, windy air would freeze them right away. Zap. Just like magic. When they cooked the fish later, it tasted fresh and so yummy. Clarence thought, 'Wow. What if everyone could keep their food this fresh?'. That gave him a big, bright idea. He went home and worked very hard. In the 1920s, he invented me. He made a special box that could get super cold, just like the Arctic air. I was born from his wonderful, chilly idea.

My job is the best job in the world. I keep your food frosty and fresh. I make everything stay still and sleepy in the cold. This helps the food stay yummy for a long, long time. I help your family save your favorite spaghetti for another dinner. I keep your green peas from getting wrinkly. And I always make sure your ice cream is perfectly cold and ready for a sunny day treat. I love my job. I feel so happy knowing I help you enjoy your favorite foods whenever you want. It makes my motor hum with joy.
