Lawn Mower

Hello, friends. My name is Lawn Mower, and I love to help. My favorite thing to do is eat yummy, green grass. Munch, munch, munch. I roll across the yard and make the grass all short and neat. When the grass is tidy, it makes a perfect place for you to run and play games. Before I came along, keeping the grass short was very, very hard work for grown-ups. It took a long time, and their arms would get so tired. I was so excited to be invented so I could help everyone have more time to play.

My very first friend was a clever man named Edwin Budding. He was so smart. One day, Edwin was at his job and saw a big machine cutting soft cloth. It cut the cloth perfectly straight. That gave him a wonderful idea. He thought, 'What if a machine like that could cut grass too?'. So, he went to work and built me. At first, I was a little noisy. I went 'whirr' and 'clank' as my big blades turned around and around. I felt so proud to roll on my new wheels. The day I was officially born was a very happy day. It was August 31st, 1830. Edwin smiled because his big idea worked.

After I was born, it became so much easier for families to have beautiful green yards. Now, everyone had more time for fun things like having picnics on soft grass and playing tag. Today, I have a very big family. Some of my cousins are big riding mowers that you can drive like a little car. Vroom, vroom. Some are even tiny robots that zip around all by themselves. No matter what we look like, we are all happy to help. We love making wonderful green spaces for you to enjoy the sunny outdoors.
