I Am the Lawn Mower
Hello there. I am a lawn mower, and I’m so happy to meet you. Before I came along, the world was a very shaggy place. Imagine grass so long and wild that it tickled your knees when you walked through it. Gardens looked like messy green jungles, and fields were full of wobbly, uneven patches. To cut the grass, people had to use a big, sharp tool called a scythe. They would swing it back and forth with a swoosh, swoosh, swoosh. It was very hard work, and it left the grass looking a bit lumpy. But one day, a very clever man had a brilliant idea. He dreamed of a way to give the world a neat and tidy haircut, and that’s where my story begins.
My inventor was a wonderful man named Edwin Budding. He worked in a big, noisy factory that made soft cloth. One of his favorite machines was one that trimmed the fuzzy bits off the fabric to make it perfectly smooth. It had spinning blades that snipped away any loose threads. One day, while watching that machine, Edwin had an amazing thought. He looked out the window at the long grass and said, “Aha. If a machine can trim cloth, why can’t a machine trim grass?”. That was the moment I started to become real. Edwin worked very hard, and finally, on August 31st, 1830, I was born. I was made of heavy iron, and I had special blades that whirred and spun, ready to do my job. At first, some people thought I was a strange idea, but Edwin knew I could help. He would test me out at night so no one would see his secret invention. I was excited and a little nervous, but I was ready to give the world its first real haircut.
Soon, people saw what I could do. I rolled across messy fields and turned them into beautiful, neat, green carpets. The long, wobbly grass became short and even, like a soft blanket covering the ground. Because of me, people could create amazing gardens with perfectly trimmed lawns. Parks became wonderful places for families to visit. I also made it possible to create special fields for playing games like football and cricket, where the ball could roll smoothly. I loved watching children run and play on the lawns I had just trimmed. Even today, I still help families make their yards look wonderful. I help create soft, tidy places for you to run, play games, and have lovely picnics with your friends and family. I am proud to be the lawn mower, the machine that helps keep the world looking neat and ready for fun.
