My Click-Clack Hug

Hello there. I am a seat belt. Do you know what I do. I give you a big, safe hug when you ride in the car. When your grown-up helps you put me on, you hear my special sound. Click. It’s a happy sound that means you are all snug and ready to go. My job is to keep you from wiggling and jiggling around too much. I hold you gently in your seat so you are always safe. I love giving you a cozy, click-clack hug every time you go for a ride on a fun adventure.

A long, long time ago, a very kind man had a wonderful idea. His name was Nils Bohlin, and he worked at a place that made cars called Volvo. One day in 1959, he thought very hard about how to keep people extra safe in their seats. He wanted to make a super hug that was strong and gentle all at once. So, he designed me. He made me a special three-point belt. That means I go across your tummy and also over your shoulder, like a superhero’s sash. This way, I can keep you extra safe if the car has to stop very, very fast. It was a brilliant and caring idea.

Nils and his friends at Volvo were so happy with their new idea. They knew I could help keep so many people safe. They wanted every single person in every single car to have a safe hug just like me. So they did something very kind. They shared their idea for how to make me with all the other car makers in the whole world. And they gave the idea away for free. They just wanted you to be safe. Now, every time you get in your car seat and hear my happy little click, you know you are ready for a safe and fun adventure. Click. Let’s go.
