The Refrigerator

Brrr! Hello there. I am a big, friendly refrigerator. My job is to keep your food yummy and fresh. But long, long ago, before I was here, things were very different. Can you imagine a world with no cold places for food? The yummy milk would get warm. The bright red strawberries would get sleepy and soft. The crispy carrots would get floppy. All the delicious food got yucky very fast. This made families sad because they couldn't save their favorite snacks for later. The food would say, "Oh no, I'm too warm!" and it would have to be thrown away. It was a big, big problem. Everyone wished for a way to keep their food happy and cool, so it would be ready to eat anytime.

Then, some very smart people, like a man named Carl von Linde and another named Fred W. Wolf, had a chilly idea. It was a big, cool idea! They thought and tinkered and worked very hard to build a special box. Not just any box, but a magic box that could stay cold all day and all night. And guess what? They made me! I work by making a gentle, humming sound and giving all the food inside a big, cold hug. This cold hug keeps the food awake and fresh so it doesn't get sleepy or yucky. It’s my superpower! Because of me, your milk stays cold and yummy for your cereal. Your apples stay crunchy and sweet. And best of all, I have a super-duper cold spot, the freezer, where I keep special treats like ice cream frozen and delicious. I love my job because I get to help you have tasty, safe food to eat every single day. I am your family's happy, humming food helper!
