The story

Māui Slows the Sun

Hello! My name is Māui, and I live on a beautiful island where the sun shines and the ocean sings. But I have a problem, and so do all my people. The sun is just too fast! It zips across the sky like a fiery bird, giving us only a few hours of daylight to fish, gather food, and play. Our clothes stay damp, and our gardens don't get enough light to grow big and strong. Everyone complains, but no one knows what to do. Well, I’m not just anyone. I have a bold, brilliant idea. I am going to catch the sun and teach it a lesson! This is the story of how I, Māui, slowed down the sun.

First, I needed help. I gathered my four brave brothers. 'We are going on an adventure,' I told them. 'We are going to tame the sun!' They were scared, but they trusted me. We traveled for many days and nights, across mountains and through deep forests, until we reached the edge of the world. There, in a giant, dark pit, is where the sun slept at night. While it was dark, we got to work. We took strong flax plants and wove them into thick, magical ropes, making a huge net. We whispered spells into the ropes to make them extra powerful. Carefully and quietly, we laid our giant net all around the edge of the pit. Then, we hid behind rocks and waited. My heart was thumping like a drum. As the first golden light started to peek over the edge, the sun began to rise. That was our moment! 'Now!' I shouted. We all pulled our ropes with all our might. The net tightened, and we had caught the sun!

The sun was furious! It blazed with heat and struggled to get free, but our magic ropes held strong. I stood up tall, holding my special club made from the jawbone of my ancestor, and walked right up to the fiery sun. 'Why do you rush across the sky?' I demanded. 'My people need more time in the day!' The sun roared, but I was not afraid. I told it that from now on, it had to travel slowly and give the world long, warm days. After a great struggle, the sun finally agreed. It promised to walk slowly across the sky for half the year, giving us long summer days, and move a little faster for the other half, giving us the shorter days of winter. We let it go, and it kept its promise. From that day on, the people had time to finish their work, grow their food, and enjoy the beautiful world. This story has been told by Polynesian families for thousands of years. It reminds us that even when a problem seems as big as the sun, a little bit of cleverness and a lot of courage can change the world. It inspires artists to paint our adventure and storytellers to share my name, Māui, the hero who tamed the sun.
