Can you feel the cool ocean mist on your face and hear the waves crash on my sandy shores. Look up, way up, at my giant redwood trees that tickle the clouds. I also have warm, sunny deserts where the sand stretches for miles, and tall mountains topped with sparkling snow. I am a land of amazing contrasts and beautiful sights. I hold so many stories of sunshine and adventure within my borders. People from all over the world have come to see my wonders. I am California, the Golden State.

My story began a very, very long time ago. For thousands of years, my lands were home to many groups of people who lived with nature, taking care of my rivers, forests, and animals. They knew my secrets and lived happily. Then one day, tall wooden ships with big white sails appeared on my waters. In the year 1542, an explorer from Spain named Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo sailed along my coast, amazed by what he saw. Much later, starting in the year 1769, Spanish priests began to build beautiful missions. They had bright white walls and red-tiled roofs that shone in the sun. These missions became gathering places and grew into some of my very first towns.

One day, something happened that changed me forever. On January 24th, 1848, a man named James W. Marshall was working near a river when he saw something sparkling in the water. He reached down and picked it up. It was gold. The news spread like wildfire. “Gold. There’s gold in California.” Soon, people from all over the world heard the exciting news and rushed to my lands. They brought shovels and pans, dreaming of finding treasure and starting a new life. This was called the Gold Rush. So many people came to live here that I grew very quickly. Because of all these new people and new towns, I became the 31st state in the United States on September 9th, 1850. I was so proud.

After the Gold Rush, my story of big dreams continued. In 1869, a great railroad was finished that stretched all the way across the country, like a long metal ribbon. It was called the Transcontinental Railroad, and it connected me to everyone else, making it easier for people to come and share their dreams. Some of those dreams turned into movie magic in a place called Hollywood, where amazing stories are brought to life on screen. Other dreams led to incredible inventions in a place called Silicon Valley, where smart people created things like computers and smartphones that have changed the world. I also work hard to protect my natural beauty, like the giant cliffs and waterfalls in my amazing Yosemite National Park. I am a land of sunshine, big ideas, and endless adventure.
