The story

The Castle Full of Stories

In a big city with sparkling canals, there is a building that looks like a castle. It has tall towers and walls made of beautiful red bricks. It is not a home for a king or queen. It is a special house for treasures and stories that live inside paintings. I am a home for art. I am the Rijksmuseum.

My story began a very long time ago. On May 31st, 1800, kind people started gathering wonderful paintings just for me. My collection of treasures moved to my favorite city, Amsterdam, in 1808. A smart man named Pierre Cuypers designed my beautiful brick walls and tall towers so I would look like a castle. I finally opened my big doors for everyone to visit on July 13th, 1885. My most famous friend lives inside me. It is a giant painting called 'The Night Watch'. It is full of adventure and brave people, and I love sharing it with everyone who comes to see me.

Many years later, I had a big makeover to make me sparkle and shine again. I felt so new and happy when it was all finished on April 13th, 2013. Now, my halls are bright, and I love it when children come to visit. You can walk through my rooms and see all the stories hidden in the paintings. Every picture is like a little window to a time long ago. I am here to share these amazing stories with you.
