Ally's Swampy Home

Hi there. My name is Ally, and I'm an American Alligator. I started my life inside a cozy, warm egg. My mom built a big nest of mud and plants to keep me and my brothers and sisters safe. When it was time to hatch, I made a little squeaking sound, and my mom gently helped me out of my shell. She was a great protector and kept us safe from harm.

I live in the warm, slow-moving water of rivers and marshes. I love to swim. I use my long, strong tail to swish back and forth, pushing me through the water. I have lots of sharp teeth, which are perfect for catching my favorite snacks like fish, frogs, and turtles. Sometimes, I just like to float on the surface, with only my eyes and nose peeking out, looking like a bumpy log.

I have a very important job in my home. During the dry season, when the water gets low, I use my snout and feet to dig big puddles called 'gator holes.' These holes hold water for me and all my neighbors—the fish, birds, and turtles can come get a drink. I'm happy I can help everyone in my swampy home stay healthy and safe. It feels good to be a helpful neighbor.
