The Story of the Arctic Hare
Hello! My name is the Arctic Hare, and I want to tell you all about my life in the cold, snowy tundra. My home is in the chilly lands of North America and Greenland. It's a wide-open space with lots of snow and wind! I was born with my brothers and sisters in a little dip in the ground that my mother made for us. We didn't have a fancy nest, just a simple spot hidden away. When we were born, we were covered in soft, gray fur. The best part was that we could see and start hopping around almost right away. We were ready for adventure from our very first day!
I have a special trick that helps me survive, and it’s my favorite thing about myself. My fur coat changes color like magic! During the long, cold winter, my fur grows in thick and snowy white. This helps me blend in with all the snow, making it very hard for predators to spot me. I look just like a little lump of snow. But when summer arrives and the snow melts, my coat changes again! It turns into a brownish-gray color, which is perfect for hiding among the rocks and plants that appear. It's the best camouflage. I also have other cool features, like my short ears, which help me save body heat and not get too cold. And my feet are amazing. They are very big and covered in thick fur, so they work just like snowshoes, helping me hop on top of the snow without sinking!
Finding food in the Arctic can be a fun challenge. In the winter, I use my strong paws and sharp claws to dig through the snow. Underneath, I find my favorite snack: woody plants and willow twigs. When the short summer finally comes, the tundra is filled with yummy treats. I love to nibble on all the different flowers, leaves, and berries I can find. But I always have to be careful, because predators like the Arctic fox and the snowy owl are looking for a meal, too. To stay safe, I have to be super fast. I can run as fast as a car driving down a neighborhood street! A long time ago, back in the 1800s when scientists first started studying my family, they saw that we would sometimes gather in big groups. Huddling together helped us stay warm and made it easier to watch out for danger.
My life hopping across the snowy land is very important for my home. I have a special job in the Arctic ecosystem. By nibbling on plants, I help keep them trimmed and healthy, kind of like a gardener. I also help new plants grow because the seeds from the plants I eat come out in my droppings, spreading them to new places. I am also a key part of the food chain, providing food for other animals. I love my life of zipping and hopping across the beautiful, icy world. I'm proud to be a special part of this amazing environment, helping to keep it balanced and full of life.
