The story

A Sea Lion's Splashy Day

Hello. I am a California Sea Lion. I am very friendly and I love to play. I have smooth, brown fur that feels so nice in the water. My eyes are big and curious because I love to look at everything around me. Do you want to know how I say hello to my friends? I make a loud sound. Arf. Arf. That is how I say hello. It is so much fun to talk to my friends and family.

My favorite thing to do is splish and splash all day. A long, long time ago, the California sea lion was scientifically described in 1828, but the species was known to indigenous peoples and early explorers before that. We have always loved the water. I like to slip right off the warm rocks and SPLASH into the cool ocean. Then I dive deep, deep, deep down. I swim fast to chase yummy fish for my lunch. After my tummy is full, I swim back to the shore. I find my family, and we all lie on the rocks together. The warm sunshine feels so good on my brown fur.

The ocean is my home, and it is so important to me and all my friends. We need our ocean home to be happy and healthy. I am a helper in the ocean. I help keep everything balanced by eating fish so there are not too many. It is my special job. I love the sea so much. Thank you for listening to my story. I will wave my flipper goodbye to you now. Goodbye.
