The story

The Flying Gardener

Hello! I am a Resplendent Quetzal. I am a very colorful bird with bright, shiny green feathers. My belly is a happy, bright red, and I have two super-long tail feathers. When I fly through the air, my long feathers flow behind me just like green ribbons dancing in the wind. I live very high up in the mountains. My special home is a misty place called a cloud forest.

My home is a cozy hole inside an old tree where I feel safe and warm. Do you want to know my favorite food in the whole world? It's a wild avocado! They are so delicious. I use my beak to pluck them right from the tree branch. Then, I open my mouth wide and swallow the fruit in one big gulp! I also love to eat other yummy fruits and sweet berries. Sometimes, for a different kind of snack, I will eat a little insect or a tiny lizard.

I have a very important job in the forest, and I am happy to do it. After I eat a yummy fruit, I fly to a new spot in the forest. Then, I spit out the big seed inside. A brand-new tree can grow from that little seed! This helps keep the forest healthy and full of trees for everyone. I love being a colorful, flying gardener for my beautiful cloud forest home. By planting new trees, I help my whole forest stay green and alive for all the other animals.
