The story

A Day in the Life of a Resplendent Quetzal

Hello! I am a Resplendent Quetzal, and I live high up in the misty cloud forests of Central America. My home is a magical place filled with green leaves and soft clouds that drift between the trees. I am known for my fabulous, jewel-toned feathers. Most of my body is covered in iridescent green feathers that shimmer and shine in the sunlight, like a beautiful emerald. I also have a bright red belly that looks like a little ruby. But my most special feature is my tail. I have super-long tail feathers that are even longer than my body. They are like green ribbons that flow gracefully behind me when I fly through the forest canopy. It's a beautiful sight to see, and I am very proud of my amazing colors and long, flowing tail that makes me one of the most striking birds in the entire world.

My favorite food in the whole world is a wild avocado. They are so delicious and full of energy. I don't peck at them like other birds might. Instead, I open my beak wide and swallow the entire avocado whole. It's a big gulp, but it's the best way to eat them. After I digest the yummy fruit part, I have a big seed left in my tummy. I can't digest that, so I fly to a new spot and spit the seed out onto the forest floor. By doing this, I am actually planting new avocado trees all over the forest. When it's time to start a family, my mate and I work together. We find an old, soft tree and use our strong beaks to carve a cozy nest deep inside. It’s a safe, warm home for our family. Inside our nest, we lay two beautiful, light-blue eggs. We take turns keeping them warm until our little chicks hatch and are ready to explore the world.

For a very long time, people have thought I was a very special bird. The ancient Maya and Aztec people, who lived here long ago, saw me as a symbol of freedom. They believed my spirit was connected to the wind and the sky, and they prized my long green feathers, but they would not harm me to get them. I was too important. As time went on, more people wanted to learn about me. In 1832, a naturalist named Pablo de La Llave officially described my species so that scientists and people all over the world could study and understand me. Today, I am very honored to be the national bird of Guatemala. The people there admire me so much that they even named their money the 'quetzal' after me. It makes me feel very proud to be such an important symbol.

My story ends here in my forest home, but my work is never done. I have a very important job as the forest's jeweled gardener. Every time I eat an avocado and spread its seed, I am helping to keep my cloud forest home healthy and growing. These new trees provide food and shelter for many other animals and help keep the air clean. My presence is a sign that the forest is thriving and full of life. I hope my story helps you understand how every creature, big or small, plays a part in taking care of our beautiful world.
