Just want Salmon?
Hello, I am a salmon, and my story begins in a place of rushing water and smooth stones. I started my life as a tiny, glowing pink egg. I was nestled with thousands of my brothers and sisters in a gravelly riverbed nest called a redd. I could feel the cool, fresh water rushing over me, keeping me safe and clean. In the spring of 2020, I hatched. I wasn't a fish just yet, but a tiny creature called an alevin. For my first meal, I didn't have to hunt. I carried my food with me in a yolk sac attached to my belly. Once that was all gone, I changed again and became a 'fry'. As a fry, I had to learn quickly how to hunt for minuscule insects that floated by in my home stream. Life was a brand-new adventure, and I was learning to survive.
Over the next year, I grew bigger and stronger. My body changed from a tiny fry into a 'parr'. This was an important stage because I developed special spotted stripes along my sides. These markings were my camouflage, helping me blend in with the river bottom and hide from hungry birds and bigger fish who saw me as a tasty snack. My river home was beautiful, but it was also a place where I had to be on constant alert, always searching for food while trying not to become food myself. Then, around the year 2022, a strange and powerful change began inside me. Scientists call it 'smoltification'. My body started preparing itself for a completely new life in saltwater. I felt a powerful, unexplainable urge to travel, to leave my familiar home and follow the current downstream toward the great unknown.
A Salmon's Great Journey

The journey downstream was thrilling, and soon the taste of the water changed from fresh to salty. For the very first time, I was in the great, blue ocean. The sheer size of it was incredible; the Pacific Ocean seemed to stretch on forever. This became my home for two years, from 2022 to 2024. I swam for thousands of miles, much farther than I ever could have imagined. The ocean was full of food, and I feasted on krill and smaller fish. With every meal, I grew bigger, stronger, and more sleek. The open ocean had its own dangers, of course, with much larger predators lurking in the deep. But it was also a place of freedom, where I could swim across vast distances and feel the power of the sea as I prepared for the most important journey of my life.
In 2024, I felt a mysterious call, a deep instinct that told me it was time to return home. But how could I find my way back to the exact little stream where I was born? I have an amazing superpower: my sense of smell is so sharp that I can detect the unique scent of my home river from thousands of miles away. I also have a built-in compass that lets me use the Earth's magnetic field to navigate. This journey home was the most difficult part of my life. I had to swim upstream, fighting against the powerful current that had once carried me to the sea. I had to leap with all my might over crashing waterfalls. I also had to be careful to escape hungry bears and eagles, who wait for my return every year. During this swim, my body changed again, turning a brilliant color to show everyone that I was ready to complete my mission.
After a long and tiring struggle, I finally reached it: the exact gravel bed where I was born. Here, I completed my life's purpose. I laid my own eggs, creating the next generation of salmon who would one day make this same incredible journey. My adventure was over, but it was not truly an end. My body provided a vital gift of nutrients from the ocean, which I carried all the way back to the river and the forest. My gift feeds the bears, the eagles, and even the roots of the giant trees that line the riverbank. I am part of a great, beautiful cycle that keeps the whole ecosystem healthy and strong, a connection between the ocean and the land.
