The Story of Al-Jahiz
Hello, my name is Abū ʿUthman ʿAmr ibn Baḥr al-Kinānī al-Fuqaymī al-Baṣrī, but the world knows me by my nickname, Al-Jahiz, which means “the one with the prominent eyes.” I was born around the year 776 in the lively port city of Basra, in what is now modern-day Iraq. My family did not have much money, so as a young boy, I helped by selling fish along the canals. But even as I worked, my mind was always hungry for knowledge. My greatest joy was spending my free time at the local mosque. It wasn't just a place for prayer; it was a center of learning where the wisest scholars, poets, and scientists of the day would gather. I would sit quietly and listen to their discussions, soaking up every word and every new idea. This was my first school, and it sparked a fire of curiosity in me that would last my entire life.
My love for learning grew into a deep passion for books. There was a funny rumor that spread about me, saying that I would sometimes rent the shops of booksellers just so I could stay inside and read all through the night. While that story may be an exaggeration, it shows how much I treasured the written word. However, I knew that true knowledge didn't come only from books. I learned by talking to everyone I could meet—merchants, sailors, travelers, and teachers. I asked endless questions about the world. Around the year 816, I made a big decision to move to the magnificent city of Baghdad. At that time, Baghdad was the intellectual capital of the world, home to a famous library and academy called the House of Wisdom. Scholars from all over came there to study and translate texts. It was the perfect place for a mind like mine. In Baghdad, I found support from leaders who valued knowledge, which allowed me to dedicate my life to writing and sharing what I learned.
Of all the books I wrote, my most famous is the 'Kitāb al-Ḥayawān', which means 'The Book of Animals'. This was not just a simple list of animals like you might find in an encyclopedia. It was a seven-volume collection of my careful observations about how animals truly lived in their natural worlds. I wrote about ideas that were very new for my time. For instance, I described how some animals hunt other animals to survive, which we now call a food chain. I also wrote about how animals have certain features or behaviors that help them survive in their specific environments, a concept we now know as adaptation. I described over 350 different animals, from the smallest ant to the largest elephant. To make the book exciting and memorable for my readers, I filled its pages not only with science but also with amazing stories, poems, and amusing anecdotes related to the animals I was describing. My goal was to make learning about the natural world a fun and fascinating adventure.
Looking back, I am amazed that I was able to write over 200 books on subjects ranging from science and poetry to history and philosophy. After many years in the busy city of Baghdad, I returned to my beloved hometown of Basra to live out my later years. I lived a very long life, to be over 90 years old. A famous story is told about how my life ended—that I was in my personal library when a huge pile of books toppled over and fell on me. We will never know if that is exactly what happened, but it has become a symbol of my lifelong devotion to learning. Today, I am remembered for my boundless curiosity and for introducing early scientific ideas about the interconnectedness of life. I hope my story inspires you to always ask questions and to see the wonder in the world around you.
