The story

Al-Jahiz: The Curious Observer

Hello. My name is Al-Jahiz, and I am excited to tell you my story. I was born in a busy city called Basra around the year 776. My family did not have very much money, but I had something else that was very valuable: curiosity. I loved to learn more than anything. I would often go to the mosques, which were important community centers, and sit quietly to listen to smart people talk about their ideas. When I wasn't there, I spent hours by the canals near my home, just watching. I watched the fish swim, the insects crawl, and all the little creatures live their lives. I wanted to understand everything I could about the wonderful world all around me.

When I was a grown man, around the year 816, I decided to move to a giant, amazing city called Baghdad. In my time, Baghdad was one of the most important places for learning in the entire world. It was filled with huge libraries that had more books than you could ever imagine. Smart people from all over came to Baghdad to discuss big ideas and share what they knew. For a curious person like me, it felt like I had found a treasure chest of knowledge. I was so inspired that I began to write. I wrote down everything I was learning about history, I wrote funny stories to make people smile, and I even wrote about how to use words in beautiful ways. I wrote so many books that I became very well known for my writing.

Out of all the things I could write about, my very favorite subject was animals. I decided to write a very large book about them called 'Kitāb al-Ḥayawān,' which means 'The Book of Animals.' This was not just a small book; it was filled with information about more than 350 different kinds of creatures. I wanted to do more than just say what an animal looked like. I wrote about how they lived and how they survived. For example, I explained how some animals can change their color to hide from bigger animals that want to eat them. I also wrote about how one animal becomes food for another, which is an important part of nature. These were new ideas that people had not written about in this way before, and I was happy to share them.

After spending many wonderful years learning and writing in Baghdad, I returned to my hometown of Basra. I spent the rest of my days there, happy and surrounded by my favorite thing: books. I lived a very long and full life, for over 90 years. Today, people still read my books and remember me as one of the greatest writers who ever wrote in the Arabic language. Because of my careful study of animals, many people also call me a father of zoology, which is the science of animals. I hope my story shows you that it is a wonderful thing to be curious and to look closely at the amazing world around you.
