Just want Amerigo Vespucci?
Hello! My name is Amerigo Vespucci. I was born in a beautiful city called Florence, in Italy, a long, long time ago in the year 1454. When I was a little boy, I loved to look at maps. I would spread them out on the floor and trace the lines with my finger. I dreamed of big adventures on the wide, blue ocean. I wanted to sail on a big ship and see what was on the other side of the water. I always wondered what new places I could find beyond the horizon.
In the year 1499, my dream came true! I finally got to sail on a big ship across the huge ocean. It was so exciting to feel the wind in the sails and see nothing but water all around. After many days, we reached new lands. I saw colorful birds I had never seen before and funny-looking animals that made me smile. Other explorers thought we had reached a place called Asia, but I looked around and realized this was a completely new place! I was so excited, I called it the 'New World.'
I wrote many letters to my friends back home about all the amazing things I saw in the New World. In the year 1507, a mapmaker read my letters and had a big idea. He decided to name this new land after me! He took my first name, Amerigo, and called the new continents 'America.' I lived to be 57 years old. My biggest adventure led to two whole continents being named after me. When you look at a map of North and South America, you can remember my story.

An Italian explorer, navigator, and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Old Worlders.
