The story

Annie M. G. Schmidt

Hello! My name is Annie M. G. Schmidt. When I was a little girl living in a country called the Netherlands, I loved words more than anything. I loved how they could rhyme and dance and tell funny stories. I would spend hours making up silly poems and songs in my head.

When I grew up, I had a little boy of my own named Flip. Every night, I would tell him stories about the adventures of a little boy and girl who lived next door to each other. Their names were Jip and Janneke. They played with their dog Takkie and their cat Siepie and had all sorts of fun. I decided to write these stories down so other children could enjoy them, too!

After Jip and Janneke, I created so many other friends for you to meet in my books. There was Pluk, who drove a little red crane truck and helped all the animals. And there was a lady named Minoes, who used to be a cat and could still talk to them! I loved writing stories that were a little bit naughty and very, very funny.

I lived a long and happy life, writing until I was a grandma. I lived to be 84 years old. Even though I am no longer here, my stories are! All my friends—Jip, Janneke, Pluk, and Minoes—are still waiting in my books to make you laugh and go on adventures. I hope my words make you smile.
