The story

Ayrton Senna: Racing for a Nation

Hello, my name is Ayrton Senna, and I was a Formula One racing driver from Brazil. My story begins on March 21st, 1960, in a big city called São Paulo. Growing up, I was completely fascinated by anything with an engine. The sound, the speed—it all captured my imagination. My father saw this passion and, when I was just four years old, he built me my very own go-kart. From the moment I first sat in it and felt the rush of moving under my own control, I knew I had found my life's purpose. I began racing officially in competitive events in 1973, when I was 13 years old. I loved the thrill of the race and the constant challenge of pushing myself to be faster and better with every single lap I completed.

As much as I loved my home in Brazil, I understood that to achieve my ultimate dream of becoming a world champion, I had to travel to where the heart of motorsport was: Europe. The best teams, the most competitive drivers, and the biggest opportunities were all there. So, in 1981, I made the difficult decision to pack my bags and move to England. It was a huge change in culture and climate, but my determination to succeed was stronger than any challenge. I started my European career in smaller racing series, such as Formula Ford, and began winning championships almost immediately. My biggest victory in those early years came in 1983, when I won the prestigious British Formula Three Championship. This win was a major turning point, proving to myself and others that I was ready for the biggest challenge of all: Formula One.

My lifelong dream became a reality in 1984 when I made my official debut in Formula One with a smaller team called Toleman. That year, during a race in the famous city of Monaco, the sky opened up and it began to pour rain. The track became incredibly slippery and dangerous, a condition that made many experienced drivers slow down. For me, however, it was a perfect opportunity to show what I could do. I started the race way back in 13th place, but I felt a unique connection with my car in the wet conditions. I began carefully and quickly passing driver after driver in my little Toleman car. I was even catching the race leader when officials stopped the race because the conditions had become too dangerous. I officially finished in second place, but that day, the entire world of racing took notice. From then on, I was often called the 'rain master' because of my skill at driving in the wet.

In 1988, I joined one of the best and most historic teams on the grid, McLaren. My new teammate was the famous French driver Alain Prost, who was already a celebrated world champion. Together, we were a powerful force, but we were also intense rivals. We both wanted to win more than anything, and our constant competition on the track pushed both of us to the very limit of our abilities. That first year with McLaren in 1988 was a dream season for me. After a long and hard-fought battle, I won my very first Formula One World Championship. Our rivalry became one of the most famous and intense in all of sports history, but it also made us both better drivers. I went on to win two more world championships with the McLaren team, securing the titles in both 1990 and 1991.

While winning races and championships was incredibly important to me, my country, Brazil, was my greatest inspiration. I always made sure to fly the Brazilian flag from my car after a victory because I wanted to share my success with all of my people back home. I hoped to give them something to be proud of and a reason to feel joy. I also believed it was my personal duty to help those who were less fortunate, especially the children of Brazil. Throughout my career, I quietly donated millions of dollars from my race earnings to help fund education programs and create better opportunities for them. I wanted every child to have a chance to chase their own dreams, just as I had been able to chase mine.

My final race was the San Marino Grand Prix on May 1st, 1994. During that race, I was involved in a terrible accident. I lived to be 34 years old, and though my life came to an end that day, my story continued. After I was gone, my family honored my deepest wishes by creating the Instituto Ayrton Senna, an organization that has helped millions of Brazilian children get a better education. I am remembered for my three world championships and my intense passion on the racetrack, but also for my deep love for my country. My death also led to many important safety improvements in Formula One, making the sport I loved safer for all the drivers who came after me.
