Just want Casimir Funk?
Hello! My name is Casimir Funk. I was born on February 23rd, 1884, in a big city called Warsaw in Poland. Even when I was a little boy, I was very curious. I loved science and was always asking questions about how the world worked, especially our bodies. I wanted to know what kept us healthy and strong.
When I grew up, I became a scientist. I moved to different countries to work in special laboratories where I could do experiments. Around that time, many people were getting sick with a mysterious illness called beriberi. It made them feel very weak and tired. Doctors couldn't figure out what was causing it. They noticed something interesting, though. People who ate polished white rice often got sick, but people who ate the whole grain, brown rice, stayed healthy. This was a very important clue that helped me with my work!
In 1912, while I was working in a lab in London, I decided to solve this puzzle. I carefully studied the brown husks that were polished off the rice to make it white. I discovered a tiny, special substance hidden in those husks. I had an idea! I gave this substance to sick birds, and they got better. It was like magic. I realized that our bodies need these special things from our food to stay healthy. I decided to give them a name. I thought they were vital, or very important, for life, so I called them 'vitamines.' Later, everyone shortened the name to 'vitamins.'
My discovery helped everyone understand that eating the right foods is important to prevent sickness. Soon, other scientists found more vitamins, like Vitamin A in carrots and Vitamin C in oranges. I lived a long and happy life for 83 years, always excited by science. So the next time you eat a colorful fruit or vegetable, you can think of me and the amazing, hidden power of vitamins!
