Confucius

Hello, my name is Kǒng Qiū, but many people today know me as Confucius. I lived a very, very long time ago in a land called Lu. My family was not rich with gold or jewels, but I felt like the wealthiest boy in the world because I had a special treasure: my love for learning. While other children played games, my favorite thing to do was read. I would find any scroll I could get my hands on and read all about the past. I loved learning about the old ways and the wise kings who came before me. I would even pretend to practice the ancient ceremonies I read about, carefully arranging flowers and bowing deeply. This was my way of showing respect for history. My curiosity was like a little seed inside me, and all the books I read were the sunshine and water that helped it grow into a big, strong tree of knowledge.

As I grew older, I looked at the world around me and saw that it wasn't always a kind or fair place. Some people were greedy, and leaders were not always thinking about what was best for their people. It made my heart feel heavy. I knew I had a big dream growing inside me. I wanted to help people learn how to be better to one another. I had a few different jobs when I was a young man, but I soon realized my true calling was to be a teacher. So, I decided to open my own school. It was a very special school because I didn't care if a student's family was rich or poor. The only thing that mattered was if they had a true hunger to learn and a desire to be a good person. I told them, "Anyone who wants to learn is welcome here!" We would sit together, and I would share everything I knew about history, goodness, and respect.

I wanted to share my big ideas with everyone, not just my students. My most important idea was very simple: be kind. I taught that we should honor our families, listen to our parents, and be loyal to our friends. I also had a special rule that is still famous today: "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself." Doesn't that sound like a good way to live? I believed that if everyone followed this rule, the world would be a peaceful, happy place. I traveled on long journeys to different parts of the land to share these ideas with kings and rulers. I hoped that if they learned to lead with goodness and fairness, everyone would be better off. Not all of them listened to me, and sometimes I felt discouraged. But I never, ever gave up on my message of kindness.

After many years of teaching and traveling, I grew very old. I passed away a long, long time ago, but my story didn't end there. My wonderful students, who had listened so carefully to my lessons, did something amazing. They gathered all of my sayings and teachings and wrote them down in a special book. They did this so that my ideas would never be forgotten. Because of them, my thoughts on being kind, showing respect, and always being eager to learn are still shared with people all over the world today, thousands of years later. My life shows that one person's ideas can be like pebbles dropped in a pond, sending out ripples of goodness that last forever and help make the world a much better place for everyone.
