Have you ever sliced a sandwich corner to corner? Or looked up at the pointy roof of a house? If you have, you’ve met me. I’m the shape you see in a slice of pizza, the sail of a boat catching the wind, or even the shiny cymbal a drummer crashes in a band. I have three straight sides and three pointy corners, which some people call my vertices. Sometimes all my sides are the same length, and sometimes they’re all different. I can be tall and skinny or short and wide. Before you knew my name, you probably saw me everywhere, holding things up, pointing the way, and making things strong. You might see me in the shape of a pine tree, a Dorito chip, or a bright yellow yield sign on the side of the road. Can you imagine a world without me? It would be a lot less pointy and a lot less sturdy. I’m one of the first shapes people ever drew, and I’ve been a part of your world for a very, very long time, helping build the most amazing things. What am I?
That’s right, I’m the Triangle. For thousands of years, people have been fascinated by me. Long, long ago, in ancient Egypt, people noticed how strong and stable I was. They saw how my shape could hold up heavy things without wobbling or falling over. So, when they built the giant, amazing pyramids for their pharaohs around the year 2580 BCE, they made my shape the star of the show. My four flat faces are all me, slanting upwards to meet at a single, perfect point in the sky. It was a brilliant way to build something that would last for thousands of years. The Egyptians also used me for something very important on the ground. The great Nile River would flood their fields each year, washing away the lines that showed whose farm was whose. It was a big mess. But they were clever. They used my special rules to measure the land and redraw the fields fairly for everyone once the water went down. Later on, a very smart man in ancient Greece named Pythagoras, who lived around the 6th century BCE, spent a lot of his time just thinking about me. He was like a detective for shapes. He discovered a super-secret power I have when one of my corners is a perfect square, like the corner of a book. He figured out a magic recipe that connects the lengths of my three sides. It’s a rule that always works. His discovery was so important that people still use it today to build houses with perfect corners and to figure out distances without even measuring them.

Today, I’m still your strongest friend. Just look around. When you see a huge bridge stretching across a river, or a tall crane lifting something heavy into the sky, look closely at its metal frame. You’ll see me everywhere, linked together in a strong pattern called a truss. Engineers know that connecting me in a web makes structures that are super strong but also lightweight. That’s why bicycle frames and giant roller coasters often have me in their design. I can handle all that pushing and pulling without bending. Artists love me, too. They use my simple shape to create beautiful patterns, interesting paintings, and powerful designs. I am a basic building block for so many things, from the computer graphics in the video games you play to the houses you live in.
