Diego de Almagro: A Story of Adventure

Hello. My name is Diego de Almagro. I am an explorer. Do you know what an explorer does? An explorer goes on big adventures to see new places. A long, long time ago, around the year 1475, I was born in a country called Spain. My home was far, far away, across a big, blue ocean. Even when I was a little boy, I dreamed of seeing the world. I loved to look at maps and imagine all the places I could go. I wanted to sail on big ships and walk on new lands. Adventure was my favorite thing.

When I grew up, I went on a very big trip with my good friend, Francisco Pizarro. We sailed to a place called Peru. In Peru, we saw mountains that were so, so tall. They looked like they touched the sky. It was amazing to see them. After that big trip, I wanted to have my own special adventure. In the year 1535, I decided to lead my own team on a very long walk. We walked and walked for many days. We were looking for a brand new place to discover. And we found it. We discovered a beautiful land that people today call Chile. It was a very long journey, but finding a new place made me feel so happy and proud.

I had so many adventures in my life. I sailed on big oceans and walked across new lands. My journeys were very important. Why? Because every time I found a new place, I helped make the maps of the world bigger and better. People could draw new lines and new shapes on their maps to show all the places where I had been. My story ended in the year 1538, but people still remember me. I lived a long life full of exploration, and I am happy that I helped people learn more about our wonderful world.
