The story

Edmond Halley

Hello. My name is Edmond Halley. When I was a little boy in London, England, my favorite thing to do was look up at the night sky. I would use a telescope to see the moon and the sparkling stars. It was like a giant, beautiful puzzle, and I wanted to learn all about it. I loved watching the stars so much that I knew I wanted to study them forever.

One night in the year 1682, I saw something amazing in the sky. It was a bright, fuzzy light with a long, glowing tail. We called it a comet. I studied my books and maps and realized that other people had seen a comet just like it many years before. I had a big idea: what if it was the very same comet, just coming back to visit? I told everyone that it would return in the year 1758, long after I would be around to see it.

I also helped my good friend, Sir Isaac Newton, share his wonderful ideas about gravity in a very important book. My work was all about being curious. And guess what? That special comet did come back, right on time. I lived to be 85 years old. Today, people remember me whenever they see that bright visitor in the sky. They even named it Halley's Comet, after me. It reminds everyone to keep looking up and wondering about our amazing universe.
