Just want Henry Cavendish?
Hello! My name is Henry Cavendish, and I was a scientist who lived a very long time ago. I was born on October 10th, 1731. I was known for being very quiet and shy. I liked being by myself so I could think and wonder about the world. My favorite thing to do was experiments, and I even had my own laboratory at home to work on my big ideas!
In my lab, I loved mixing different things to see what would happen. In 1766, I was working with metals and acids when I discovered a brand-new kind of air! It was very strange. This air was much, much lighter than the air we breathe. If you lit a match near it, it would make a funny 'pop!' sound. I called it 'inflammable air' because it could catch fire. Years later, other scientists gave it the name we use today: hydrogen.
I had another very big question: I wanted to know how heavy the entire planet Earth was! It sounds impossible, but I built a special machine in 1798 to figure it out. It had heavy metal balls and tiny wires that could measure a very, very small pull between them. By measuring that tiny pull, called gravity, I could do the math to figure out the weight of the whole world. People were amazed that I could 'weigh the world' from my own laboratory!
I lived a long and busy life full of questions and experiments. I lived to be 78 years old. Even though I was a very quiet person, my scientific discoveries made a big noise! My work helped other scientists understand what water is made of and how gravity works. Today, my ideas are still a big part of chemistry and physics, showing that even the quietest people can have the biggest ideas.
