The story

John Adams: A Leader for a New Country

Hello! My name is John Adams. I grew up a long, long time ago on my family's farm. It was in a colony called Massachusetts. I loved to run and play outside in the sunshine. But my very favorite thing to do was read books. I loved to learn everything I could from the words on each page. Reading felt like a wonderful adventure.

When I grew up, I had a very important job. My friends and I had a big idea. We wanted to start our own country, a special place where people could be in charge of their own lives. We decided to call this new country the United States of America. I worked with my good friends, like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In the year 1776, I helped write down all of our big ideas on a famous paper called the Declaration of Independence. It was the beginning of our new country.

After we started our country, my friend George Washington was the very first president. Then, in the year 1797, the people chose me to be the second president. It was a big job, and I worked very hard to help our new country grow strong. I was even the very first president to live in the President's House, which you now know as the White House. I lived to be 90 years old, and I was so proud to watch America grow. Today, people remember me as a leader who helped create the United States.
