The story

John Napier

Hello! My name is John Napier. I'd like to tell you my story. I was born way back in the year 1550 in my family's home, a tall stone building called Merchiston Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland. Even as a young boy, I was fascinated by numbers and puzzles. When I was just 13 years old, in 1563, I went off to the University of St Andrews. I loved learning everything I could, but my favorite subject was always mathematics.

In my time, there were no calculators or computers. People had to do all their math by hand, which took a very long time! This was a huge problem for people like astronomers, who studied the stars and planets, and for sailors navigating huge oceans. They had to multiply and divide enormous numbers to figure out where they were and where they were going. One wrong calculation could send a ship completely off course! I thought there had to be a better, faster way to do this tricky math.

I spent nearly 20 years working on a secret project, a brand-new way to think about numbers. My big idea was something I called 'logarithms.' It might sound like a complicated word, but the idea was simple: I found a way to turn difficult multiplication problems into much easier addition problems. Imagine turning a really hard math test question into a simple '2+2'! In 1614, I published my ideas in a book so everyone could use them. Scientists and mathematicians were thrilled! It was like I had given them a mathematical superpower that saved them tons of time.

I had other ideas, too. I helped make the decimal point—that little dot you use in numbers like 3.5—popular for everyone to use. I also invented a fun tool to help with multiplication. People called them 'Napier's Bones' because they were often made from ivory or bone. They were a set of rods with numbers on them. By arranging them in the right way, you could solve math problems, almost like a handheld calculator from the 1600s!

I lived to be 67 years old, passing away on April 4th, 1617, in the same castle where I was born. My work didn't stop when my life did. The logarithms I invented were used for over 300 years to help with amazing feats, from navigating the globe to building incredible machines. My ideas were like a key that unlocked faster progress in science and astronomy. I'm so proud that my love for numbers helped people solve problems and better understand the world for centuries to come.
