The story

Karl Benz: The Man Who Invented the Automobile

Hello! My name is Karl Benz, and I am the person who invented the very first automobile. My story begins a long time ago. I was born on November 25th, 1844. When I was a little boy, I was fascinated by machines. My father was a locomotive driver, which means he drove big, powerful steam trains! Watching him work made me fall in love with engines and wheels. I was always a curious child. I would take toys and clocks apart just to see how all the little pieces inside worked together. I dreamed that one day, I would build my very own invention that could move all by itself.

As I grew up, a big idea started to form in my mind. I wanted to create a 'horseless carriage,' which was my name for a vehicle that could move without being pulled by a horse or any other animal. It was a very new and strange idea back then, and not everyone thought it was possible. But I had someone very special who believed in me: my wonderful wife, Bertha. She was my best teammate and encouraged me to follow my dream. Around the year 1871, she even helped me start my very own workshop where I could build and experiment. I worked for many years on a new kind of engine. It was hard work, but I never gave up. I will always remember the exciting night on New Year's Eve in 1879 when my engine finally ran for the very first time! It was loud and shaky, but it worked!

After my engine was ready, I started building a special vehicle for it. In 1885, I finished my creation. It was a car with three wheels, and I called it the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. It was a thrilling moment! The next year, on January 29th, 1886, I received an official paper called a patent. This patent proved that I was the inventor, and it meant that my Motorwagen was the world's very first automobile! At first, people were not sure what to think of my invention. But my brave wife, Bertha, had a brilliant idea. In August of 1888, she secretly took the car on an adventure. Without telling me, she and our two sons drove the Motorwagen on the first-ever long-distance road trip! They wanted to prove to everyone that my car was not just a toy, but a useful machine that was strong enough for a real journey.

Bertha's amazing trip worked! After people heard about her adventure, they became very excited about the automobile. Soon, everyone wanted a horseless carriage. My small workshop grew into a big company. Many years later, my company joined with another one to create the cars we know today as Mercedes-Benz. I lived to be 84 years old. The next time you ride in a car, you can think of me, Bertha, and our dream of the horseless carriage that changed how we all travel forever.
