The story

The Story of the Mona Lisa

Hello! My name is Lisa. I lived a long, long time ago in a beautiful city in Italy called Florence. Our city had tall towers and pretty red roofs, and I loved walking along the river with my family.

One day, a famous artist named Leonardo da Vinci asked to paint my picture. It was a special treat! I put on my best dress and sat very still for him. It took a long time, and sometimes it was hard not to wiggle. I tried to keep a little, secret smile on my face, just for him.

Leonardo’s painting of me became the most famous painting in the whole world! Today, people call it the Mona Lisa. I lived to be 63 years old, and even now, so many years later, people from all over the world visit a big museum in Paris just to see my picture. They look at my face and still wonder what I was thinking to make me smile.
