Hello, my name is Lisa Gherardini, and while my name may not be familiar, my face is known around the world. I am the woman in the famous painting called the Mona Lisa. But long before my portrait was hung in a museum, I was a girl living in one of the most exciting cities in the world during a remarkable period of history. I was born in Florence, Italy, on June 15th, 1479, at the height of the Renaissance. This was a time of great change, when art, science, and new ideas were flourishing everywhere. My family, the Gherardinis, had a long and respected history in Florence. Though we were not the wealthiest family, we were part of the city's merchant class. Growing up, the city was my world. The streets were filled with the sounds of artisans at work, merchants selling their goods in bustling markets, and the sights of incredible sculptures and buildings being created. It felt as though inspiration and beauty were in the very air we breathed.
At the age of fifteen, my life took a new and wonderful direction. On March 5th, 1495, I married a kind and successful cloth and silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. As was the custom, I became known as Lisa del Giocondo. My husband was a good man, and we built a comfortable life together in Florence. Our home was soon filled with the sounds of children. Over the years, we had five children, and being a mother and managing our household became the center of my world. In 16th-century Florence, a woman's life was dedicated to her family and home, and I found great purpose in this role. My days were not filled with grand adventures but with the everyday joys and challenges of raising a family. I oversaw the running of our home, cared for my children, and supported my husband in his business. It was a life of purpose and contentment, typical for a woman of my standing at that time.

Around the year 1503, Francesco decided he wanted a portrait of me, perhaps to celebrate the birth of our son or our new home. The artist he hired was no ordinary painter; he was the great Leonardo da Vinci, a man already famous for his genius as an artist, inventor, and scientist. Sitting for a portrait was a long and difficult process. I had to remain still for hours at a time, day after day. Maestro Leonardo understood this, and he was very clever. To keep my spirits up and to capture a pleasant expression, he would hire musicians to play gentle music and jesters or storytellers to entertain me while he worked. I believe this is why the smile in the painting seems a bit soft and mysterious, caught in a fleeting moment of amusement. The process took years. Leonardo was a perfectionist and was always experimenting with new techniques. He became so fascinated with the painting that he never considered it finished. He worked on it for the rest of his life and, in the end, never delivered it to my husband. Instead, he took it with him when he moved to France years later.
After my time sitting for Leonardo, my life continued its quiet and steady rhythm. While he was off perfecting my portrait, I was busy raising my children into young adults and managing our growing household. The years passed, and my world remained firmly planted in Florence, surrounded by my family and community. I had no idea that the painting was becoming a masterpiece or that one day it would be seen by millions. My life was not defined by that portrait; it was defined by my duties as a wife, a mother, and a member of Florentine society. It was a private life, full of the small, important moments that make up a person's existence. For a woman of my time, this was a good and fulfilling life, and I was content with my place in the world.
My husband, Francesco, passed away in the year 1538. After his death, I made the decision to go and live at the Convent of Saint Ursula, where one of my daughters was a nun. It was a peaceful place to spend my later years. My life came to a quiet end on July 15th, 1542. I lived to be 63 years old. I could never have dreamed that for over 500 years, people from every corner of the globe would travel to a museum in Paris called the Louvre just to look upon my face. My ordinary, happy life in Florence became forever linked to one of the world's most extraordinary works of art, and I became known to history simply as the Mona Lisa.
