Mansa Musa

Hello. My name is Musa, and I was a king, or 'Mansa,' a very long time ago. I ruled the great Mali Empire, which was in a part of the world called West Africa. I became the ruler around the year 1312. My kingdom was a very special place. It was known for being rich in things that people wanted, especially shiny gold and useful salt. Having so much gold and salt made my empire one of the wealthiest in the entire world. People from all over knew about the riches of Mali, and I was proud to be its leader.

One of the most exciting things I ever did was go on a great journey. In the year 1324, I started a special trip called a pilgrimage to a faraway city named Mecca. It wasn't just me traveling; I brought thousands of people with me. We had a huge group, with soldiers to protect us, helpers, and many, many camels. The camels were amazing because they carried all our supplies and so much gold. As we traveled, I wanted to be kind and share what I had. Whenever we passed through towns and cities, I was very generous and gave gold to the people I met. It was important to me to share my kingdom's great wealth with others.

When I returned home from my long journey, I didn't come alone. I brought back many smart people with me, like architects who design buildings and teachers who love to share knowledge. I wanted to use everything I had seen and learned to make my home in the Mali Empire even more wonderful. We focused on making the city of Timbuktu a beautiful center for learning. The architects helped us build amazing new buildings, like the famous Djinguereber Mosque. We also built big schools where anyone who wanted to learn could come and study. Timbuktu became a shining city known for its books and brilliant thinkers.

I was the Mansa of the Mali Empire for 25 years, and I lived to be about 57 years old. People remember me for my great journey and for being generous with my wealth. They also remember how I helped make Timbuktu a famous city where learning was celebrated. My story helps show the world how great and important the Mali Empire was a long, long time ago.
