Marco Polo
Hello! My name is Marco Polo. I was born in a magical city built on water called Venice, way back in the year 1254. In my city, instead of roads, we had canals full of water. People traveled everywhere in long, graceful boats. It was a very special place to grow up. My father, Niccolò, and my uncle, Maffeo, were merchants. That means they traveled to faraway lands to trade for wonderful things like spices and soft silks. They were on an adventure for so long that I didn't even get to meet my father until I was a teenager! It was a long time to wait, but their stories made it worth it.
When my father and uncle finally returned, they told me the most incredible stories about a place called Cathay, which you now call China. They described its huge cities and amazing inventions. I listened to every word, feeling a sense of wonder. In the year 1271, when I was 17 years old, they invited me to go with them on their next journey! I shouted with joy. My great adventure was about to begin. We traveled for years and years, crossing some of the highest mountains in the world and walking through vast, sandy deserts. Our long journey followed a famous path that other traders used, called the Silk Road. It was not an easy trip, but every day was a new discovery. Finally, we arrived at the shining court of the most powerful ruler in the world, the great emperor Kublai Khan.
Kublai Khan, the emperor of this huge land, was very curious about me and my home in Europe. He was also very kind and welcomed me into his palace. He asked me to work for him, sending me on important missions all over his giant empire. For the next 17 years, I was his special messenger! I traveled to places that no European had ever seen before. I discovered that people used money made from paper instead of heavy gold or silver coins. I saw them burn special black rocks, which they called coal, in their fireplaces to keep their homes warm. This was a fantastic idea! They even had a super-fast mail service with messengers riding horses from station to station to deliver news. It was a world full of wonders, and I was seeing it all with my own eyes.
After 24 years away from home, I finally returned to Venice in the year 1295. I was so happy to be back and told everyone my stories. But the things I described were so different from anything they knew that some people found them hard to believe. They thought I was making it all up! So, I decided to write everything down in a book called 'The Travels of Marco Polo.' I lived to be about 69 years old. My book inspired many other explorers to travel and learn about the world, helping people from different countries understand each other a little better.
