Rachel Carson: A Friend to Nature
Hello, my name is Rachel Carson. I was a little girl who loved the whole wide world. I was born a long, long time ago, on May 27th, 1907. I lived on a big green farm with my family. My mom was my best teacher. She would take my hand and we would walk into the woods together. She showed me the fuzzy caterpillars inching along a leaf. We would listen to the birds singing their happy songs in the tall trees. Chirp, chirp, chirp. She taught me the names of the bright flowers that peeked out of the ground. I loved feeling the cool dirt and watching the busy little bugs. Exploring outside was my favorite game. The world felt like a big, beautiful storybook, and I wanted to read every single page.
When I grew up, I wanted to learn even more about our amazing world. So, I became a scientist. My favorite place to study was the big, blue ocean. The ocean is like a secret world full of wonderful surprises. I learned about shiny fish that swim in rainbow schools and tiny crabs that scuttle sideways on the sand. I saw starfish that looked like they fell from the night sky. The ocean was my good friend. I loved it so much that I wanted everyone else to love it too. So, I started writing books. My books were like letters to the world, telling everyone about the magic hidden under the waves. I wanted to share the ocean's stories so that everyone would help take care of our wonderful water world.
One day, I noticed something sad. The world outside my window was becoming too quiet. The birds were not singing their happy songs anymore. I learned that some special sprays people were using were making the birds and the bugs sick. This made my heart feel heavy. I knew I had to help my animal friends. So, I wrote my most important book. It was called Silent Spring, and it was finished on September 27th, 1962. My book was a story for the grown-ups, helping them see how to be better friends to our Earth. I grew older and then I died, but my words helped people learn to protect the birds, the bugs, and the trees. You can be a helper too, by being kind to every living thing.
