Just want Savitribai Phule?
Hello! My name is Savitribai Phule. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1831. When I was a little girl in India, I loved looking at books. I wanted to know what all the words said. In those days, girls like me were not usually allowed to go to school. I dreamed of learning how to read and write all by myself.
When I was nine years old, in 1840, I married a very kind man named Jyotirao. He saw how much I wanted to learn. So, every day, he would teach me my letters and my numbers. It was so exciting! I learned how to read books. I learned to write my own name. Learning felt like opening a brand new door to the world.
Once I knew how to read, Jyotirao and I had a wonderful idea. In 1848, we decided to open a school just for girls, so they could all learn, too. And that is exactly what we did! It was the very first school for girls in our country, India. Seeing their happy faces as they learned to read was the best feeling in the world.
I lived to be 66 years old and passed away in 1897. I spent my life helping others learn. Today, people remember me as India's first woman teacher. It makes my heart so happy to know that millions of girls can now go to school and follow their dreams, all because we started with one small classroom.
