The story

Thomas Savery

Hello! My name is Thomas Savery. I lived a very long time ago in a country called England. Even when I was a little boy, I loved to build things and figure out how they worked. I was always looking at gears and wheels and wondering, 'How can I make something new and helpful?'.

One day, I was watching a pot of water boil. Whoosh! A big puff of steam pushed the lid right up! That gave me a super-duper idea. What if I could use the power of steam to do big jobs? At that time, in the late 1600s, miners had a big problem. Deep underground, their mines would fill up with water, making it hard to work. I thought, 'I can help!'. I invented a special machine called a steam pump. It used hot steam to suck all the water out of the deep, dark mines.

My engine was one of the very first of its kind! It wasn't perfect, but it showed everyone how powerful steam could be. After me, other inventors used my ideas to build even bigger and better steam engines for trains and factories. I lived a full life, and I am happy my puffy, steamy idea helped change the world and made big jobs a little bit easier for everyone.
