Have you ever pretended to be a roaring lion, a brave superhero, or a wizard casting a spell? When you do that, you’re calling on me. I am the magic of make-believe. I let you walk in someone else’s shoes, feel what they feel, and tell their story. Before I had a name, people used me to share tales around campfires, showing each other what it was like to hunt a giant mammoth or dance in the rain. I am the fun of dressing up and the thrill of becoming someone new, just for a little while. I am Acting.

My story as a special art began a very long time ago, in a sunny place called Ancient Greece. Around the 6th century BCE, the people there held big festivals with lots of singing and dancing to honor a god named Dionysus. For a long time, a big group of people called a chorus would sing stories all together. But one day, around the year 534 BCE, a man named Thespis did something new. He stepped out from the group, put on a mask, and began to speak as if he were a character in the story. He wasn't just telling the story; he was being the story. He was the very first actor. After Thespis showed everyone how exciting I could be, I grew and grew. In Ancient Rome, actors performed in huge outdoor theaters for big crowds. Later, during the Middle Ages, I helped people learn stories from the Bible by acting them out in town squares for everyone to see. Then, a writer named William Shakespeare came along in England. In the late 1500s and early 1600s, he wrote the most amazing plays like 'Romeo and Juliet'. In his time, men and boys played all the parts, even the girls' roles. He showed everyone how powerful I could be at telling stories about love, friendship, and big adventures.

Today, you can find me almost everywhere. I am in the movies you watch on a big screen, the cartoons that make you laugh on Saturday mornings, and the plays you see on a stage with bright, colorful lights. I’m even in the video games you play, where actors lend their voices and movements to make the characters feel real. But I am not just for famous people. I am for you, too. When you play pretend with your friends in the backyard, you are using me to explore your imagination. When you tell a story to your family and act out all the different parts with funny voices, you are using me to make the story come alive for everyone. I help people understand each other a little better by imagining what it’s like to be someone else. I am a superpower of imagination that everyone has inside them.
