Colors and the Color Wheel

Hello there. You might not know my name, but you see my work everywhere. I splash the world with bright red strawberries, sunny yellow lemons, and deep blue oceans. These three colors—red, yellow, and blue—are my superstars. They are the primary colors, and they’re special because you can’t make them by mixing other colors. They are the beginning of every rainbow, every painting, and every colorful thing you can imagine. I love to see how they pop up in your world, from the clothes you wear to the toys you play with. Before I came along, all the colors were like a big, jumbled box of crayons. People knew they existed, but they didn't know how they were all connected. But what happens when these superstar colors decide to dance together? That’s where the fun really begins.

That’s when the real magic happens. When red and yellow hold hands, they create a cheerful orange, like a pumpkin on a sunny day. When yellow and blue hug, they make a fresh, grassy green, perfect for a big park. And when blue and red mix, they become a royal purple, fit for a king or queen's crown. For a long, long time, people knew how to mix colors, but they were still a bit of a mystery. Then, a very curious man named Sir Isaac Newton came along. Way back in the year 1666, he was sitting in a dark room and let just a little bit of sunlight shine through a special piece of glass called a prism. He discovered that sunlight, which looks white, is actually made of all the colors of the rainbow. He saw red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple all lined up. Then he had a brilliant idea. He took that long rainbow of colors and bent it into a circle, so the colors could all be friends. And just like that, I was born. I am the Color Wheel, and I was created to show how all the colors are part of one big, happy family.

Ever since Sir Isaac Newton introduced me, I’ve been helping people make the world a more beautiful place. I show artists which colors look extra sparkly next to each other, like red and green on a holiday sweater or yellow and purple in a field of flowers.
