The Story of Cycling
Whoosh. Can you feel the wind on your face. Whir, whir, whir go the spinning wheels on the path. It feels like you are flying, doesn't it. You can go fast or you can go slow. It is so much fun to feel the ground moving under you. I am the happy feeling you get when you go pedal, pedal, pedal. I am the big smile you have when you ride all by yourself. I am the whiz and the whir of a fun adventure outside.
I am Cycling. Hello there. It is so nice to meet you. A long, long, long time ago, I looked very different. In 1817, a man in Germany named Karl von Drais made a special machine. He called it a 'running machine.' It was made of wood and had two big wheels, but it did not have any pedals. Can you imagine. People had to push off the ground with their feet to make me go. Push, push, push. It was a little wobbly. Many years later, in the 1860s, clever people added pedals. That changed everything. Now you could push the pedals with your feet to make the wheels spin round and round. I became so much faster and so much more fun.
Today, I am here to help you go on adventures. We can ride together in the park. We can race your friends to the corner. Riding me helps make your legs super strong and healthy. I love exploring the big world with you. It does not matter if you have a big bike or a little bike with training wheels. I am happy just to ride with you. I am Cycling, and I am always ready for our next adventure. Let's go.
