The story

The Story of Folklore

Have you ever felt a shiver run down your spine during a spooky story told around a campfire. Or have you ever played a clapping game on the playground, the rhythm so perfect you didn't even have to think about it. Maybe you remember a special lullaby your grandmother sang, a melody that made you feel safe and warm. I am in all of those things, and so much more. For thousands and thousands of years, I have lived in the special foods your family makes for holidays, like the secret-recipe cookies or the Thanksgiving turkey cooked just right. I am in the funny sayings and inside jokes that only your family understands. Before there were lots of books or phones, I was the main way people shared their history and their hearts. I traveled from person to person as a whisper, a song, a dance, or a clever riddle. I didn't need to be written down to be remembered. I lived in the memories of storytellers, musicians, and elders who passed me along to the next generation. I connected children to their parents, and their parents to their grandparents, all the way back to their very first ancestors. Can you imagine a world without these shared secrets. I am the invisible thread that ties a community together and makes it feel like one big family. You have known me your whole life, even if you didn't know my name. I am the wisdom, the art, the beliefs, and the customs of a community. I am the knowledge of the people. I am Folklore.

For a very long time, people just lived with me. They shared me at festivals, sang me in the fields while they worked, and told me by the fireplace on cold winter nights. They didn't need a special word for me because I was just a part of everyday life. But then, as the world started to change and cities grew bigger, some people started to worry that I might get lost or forgotten. Two brothers in Germany, named Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, were some of the first to feel this worry. In the early 1800s, they traveled all over the countryside, listening carefully to storytellers in small villages. They wrote down every magical tale they could find about clever girls, brave princes, and tricky wolves. They wanted to create a treasure chest of stories to save me for the future. On December 20th, 1812, they published their first collection, which you might know as 'Grimms' Fairy Tales.' Still, I didn't have a proper name. Some scholars called me 'popular antiquities,' which sounds a bit stuffy and dusty, don't you think. It didn't capture my lively, joyful spirit. Then, one day, an English writer named William John Thoms had a brilliant idea. On August 22nd, 1846, he wrote a letter to a magazine. In that letter, he suggested a brand new, wonderful name for me: 'Folk-Lore.' He cleverly combined two Old English words: 'folk,' which means people, and 'lore,' which means knowledge or stories. The knowledge of the people. It was perfect. The name stuck, and suddenly, people all over the world began to see me clearly. They started clubs and societies dedicated to finding and preserving me in every corner of the globe.

Today, I am more alive than ever, and I am not just tucked away in old books on a dusty shelf. I am in the jokes you text your friends, the silly songs you make up on the school bus, and the special way your family celebrates a birthday. Have you ever seen a funny video or a picture with a caption that everyone seems to understand and share. That's me, too. Those are called memes, and they are a new kind of modern folklore. Every time you learn a family recipe from a grandparent, teach a friend a secret handshake, or tell the story of how your parents met, you are helping me grow and change. You are a storyteller, a tradition-keeper, and a very important part of my journey. I connect you to your past, but I also connect you to people all over the world who share their own unique stories and customs. By sharing your traditions, you add your own special voice to my beautiful, never-ending song. So listen closely to the stories around you, share them freely, and always remember the power of the tales that make you who you are.
