The story

The Story of Gold

Imagine something sleepy and shiny, hiding at the bottom of a river or deep underground. I sparkle like a tiny sun caught in the water. People who find me can't believe their eyes. I have a beautiful, sunny color, and I never get rusty or old. Even after thousands of years, I look just as bright and new as the day I was found. I don't tarnish, which is a fancy word for getting dull and gray. I love to glimmer and gleam, catching the light and winking at you from a ring on a finger or a necklace. Have you guessed who I am yet. I am Gold.

I have been a special treasure for a very, very long time. Around 4600 BCE, people in a place we now call Bulgaria discovered my sparkly nuggets in the ground. They were the very first to craft me into beautiful beads and jewelry. It was so exciting. From there, I traveled to ancient Egypt. The pharaohs, who were the kings of Egypt, thought I was the skin of the gods. They believed I was magical and connected to the sun. One famous young king named Tutankhamun had a mask made entirely of me around 1323 BCE. It covered his face and still shines with a brilliant light today, thousands of years later. I wasn't just for kings, though. Around 600 BCE in a kingdom called Lydia, people had a clever idea. They stamped me into the world’s first coins. This made it much easier for everyone to buy and sell things like bread or sandals.

Now, hold on tight, because we are about to jump forward in time for a big adventure. People have always gone on exciting quests to find me. One of the biggest adventures was the California Gold Rush. It all started on January 24th, 1848, when a man named James W. Marshall spotted me shining in the water at a sawmill. He shouted with excitement, and soon, the secret was out. Thousands of people, who were called 'Forty-Niners,' rushed to California. They dreamed of finding me and starting a new life. Finding me was hard work. People had to pan for me in rivers and dig for me in the earth. But their hard work helped build new towns and cities all across the west. My story doesn't end there, though. Today, I have some very important secret jobs where I help people in surprising ways.

Did you know that a tiny piece of me is probably inside your phone or computer right now. It's true. I am a super helper because I'm great at carrying electricity and I never get rusty. That means I help your gadgets work super fast. I even travel to outer space. Astronauts wear helmets that have a super-thin layer of me on their visors, which is the clear part they see through. I act like special sunglasses, protecting their eyes from the bright, powerful rays of the sun. From a pharaoh's crown to a championship medal to the tiny parts in a spaceship, I am a symbol of things that are precious and last a long time. I love to shine, and I hope I remind you to let your own special talents shine brightly, too.
