The story

I Am Gymnastics!

Do you love to tumble on the soft grass? Or swing from the monkey bars at the playground? I’m the feeling you get when you stretch up high to the sky or balance on one foot like a flamingo. Before you knew my name, you knew how fun it was to move your body in amazing ways.

My name is Gymnastics! I’m a super old sport. A long, long time ago, around 500 BCE in a sunny place called ancient Greece, people used me to help them become strong. They would practice running, jumping, and climbing to keep their bodies healthy and ready for anything. I was like a fun game to make everyone feel powerful.

A man named Friedrich Ludwig Jahn helped make me the sport I am today in the early 1800s. He invented special things to play on, like high bars and balance beams! Then, in 1896, I got to be in a huge sports party called the Olympic Games, where people from all over the world showed how they could flip, twist, and fly through the air.

Today, I help you learn to do cartwheels, balance on a line, and swing with a smile. I’m not just about winning medals; I’m about trying your best, being strong in your body and your heart, and having so much fun. Whenever you jump, roll, or stretch, you’re playing with me! What amazing things can your body do?
