Just want Halley's Comet?
Whoosh! Here I come! I’m a big, sparkly snowball flying through space. I have a long, beautiful tail that glitters in the dark. I love to travel on a big, loopy path around the bright, warm Sun. I fly by your home, the Earth, to wave a quick hello, but I can’t stay for long. After I say hi, I zoom away on my trip and don't come back for a very, very long time. It takes me about 76 years to make one big loop! What am I? I’m a special visitor from space. My name is Halley's Comet!
For thousands of years, people would look up at the night sky and see me sparkle. They saw me way back in the year 1066 when kings lived in big castles. They drew pictures of me, but they didn't know I was the same visitor each time. Then, a very smart man who loved to look at the stars, named Edmond Halley, had an idea. In the year 1705, he looked at all the old drawings and used numbers to figure out my secret path. He said, 'I think that sparkly light is the same comet, and it will come back again!' He told everyone to watch the sky for me.
And guess what? He was right! I came back, just like he said I would. After he figured out my secret, people named me Halley's Comet in his honor. Now, everyone knows I'm a friendly visitor who always returns. I remind people to look up, be curious, and wonder about our amazing universe. I’m on my long journey now, but I promise I’ll be back to sparkle in your sky in the year 2061. Maybe you can wave to me then! Keep exploring the stars!
