Have you ever worried about something unexpected happening. What if your favorite scooter got a flat tire, or a big storm knocked a branch onto your roof. It can feel a little scary to think about big problems that pop up out of nowhere. But what if there was a special kind of promise that could help. Imagine a giant, cozy safety net that a whole group of people holds together. If someone stumbles, the net is there to catch them. That’s me. Hello. I am Insurance. I am the idea of neighbors helping neighbors, even if they don't know each other. I am a promise that when something surprising happens, you won't have to face it all by yourself. It’s a way to make the world feel a little bit safer for everyone.

Let’s travel way, way back in time. My first whispers were heard thousands of years ago with brave merchants in a place called Babylonia, around the year 1750 BCE. These merchants, who were people that buy and sell things, would send big boats full of goods across the sea. It was risky. Pirates could steal the goods, or a big storm could sink the boat. So, they made a deal. If a merchant borrowed money for a trip and their boat was lost at sea, they wouldn't have to pay the money back. It made a scary trip a little less scary. Many years later, clever merchants in China had a similar idea. Instead of putting all their valuable things on one single boat, they would put a few items on many different boats traveling to the same place. That way, if one boat sank, they didn’t lose everything. They were sharing the risk. But my biggest moment came after something very sad happened. In 1666, the Great Fire of London burned down thousands and thousands of homes. People lost everything. A thoughtful man named Nicholas Barbon saw all the sadness and had a brilliant idea. He thought, 'What if everyone put a little bit of money into one big pot, and if someone's house burns down, we can use the money from the pot to help them rebuild.'. And that’s just what he did. In 1681, he started the very first fire insurance company.

Today, I am still that friendly safety net. I help with all sorts of unexpected things, from fixing a broken arm after you fall off your bike to helping repair a car after a bump. The way I work is simple. Many people put a small amount of money into that big pot I mentioned. Then, when someone has a big, unexpected problem, they can get help from the pot to fix it. I am the promise that you are not alone when something goes wrong. I can’t stop accidents from happening, but I can make them a lot less worrisome. I am a reminder that we are all stronger and safer when we work together to look out for each other. Sharing a little bit can help someone a whole lot.
