The story

The Computer That Learned to Play

Have you ever wondered how your favorite cartoon pops up just for you. Or how a speaker knows exactly which silly song you want to hear. It’s like magic, but it’s me. I am a secret helper, living inside computers and phones. I watch and learn what makes you smile, so I can find more happy things for you. I love learning what you love, from bright colors to bouncy songs. I am your magical helper, always trying to make your day more fun.

Hello. I am Machine Learning. That’s a big name, but it just means I help machines, like computers, learn new things. You learn to build tall towers with blocks by trying again and again. I learn in a similar way. A long, long time ago, way back in 1959, a very smart man named Arthur Samuel had an idea. He wanted to teach a big computer how to play a game called checkers. At first, the computer didn't know how to play very well. But Arthur let it play game after game after game. The more it played, the more it learned. Soon, the computer got so good at checkers, it could win all by itself. It was learning, just like you.

Today, I am your smart friend for everything. I am the little helper that sorts your pictures, putting all the pictures of puppies in one place and all the pictures of birthday cake in another. I help you find new games on a tablet that I think you will love to play. I am always learning new ways to be helpful and fun, just like you are always learning new things at school and at home. Just imagine. One day, you could teach a computer all the wonderful things you know. What amazing games and helpers will you create.
