Marble

Have you ever seen a big, fancy building with shiny, smooth walls. Or maybe you’ve seen a statue in a park that looks so real it could almost be alive. I am a special kind of stone that people have loved for a very long time. Sometimes I am pure white, like freshly fallen snow. Other times, I have beautiful swirls of gray, pink, or green running through me like rivers on a map. But I have a secret. I wasn’t always this strong and beautiful. A long, long time ago, I was a different, softer stone called limestone. Deep inside the Earth, it got very hot and I was squeezed super tight. All that heat and pressure transformed me, changing me into something new. I am Marble.

For thousands of years, I rested inside mountains, waiting to be discovered. People in a place called Ancient Greece, way back in the 5th century BCE, were some of the first to find me. They realized I was strong and beautiful, perfect for making things that would last forever. They carefully cut me out of the mountains and used me to build magnificent temples for their gods. One of those temples, the Parthenon, was made with so much of me, and you can still see its ruins today. Later, the Ancient Romans loved me too. They used me to make their cities look grand with strong columns and smooth floors. Many centuries later, during a time called the Renaissance, a famous artist named Michelangelo saw me. He looked at a giant block of me and didn't just see a rock. He saw a hero inside. He carefully chipped and carved me for years until he revealed his famous statue, David, which people from all over the world still travel to see.

My story didn’t end in ancient times. I am still all around you today, and not just in museums or old buildings. You might find me in your own home. I could be the cool, smooth countertop in a kitchen where your family makes cookies, or the shiny floor in a big hotel lobby. Sometimes I am a small statue on a shelf or a beautiful piece of art in a city park. When you touch me, you are touching a piece of Earth's history. I am a reminder that with a little time and a lot of pressure, something simple can become something strong, beautiful, and timeless. So next time you see a shining, swirly stone, look closely. You might be looking at me, and I have so many amazing stories to tell.
