The story

The Community Piggy Bank

Have you ever wondered who builds the smooth roads your family drives on, or who pays the amazing teachers at your school. What about the person who makes sure the library has new books to read. That's where I come in. I'm like a giant, invisible piggy bank for your whole town or country. Everyone chips in a little bit of their money, and together, we use it to pay for all the big, important things we share. I help build parks with super-fun slides, make sure firefighters have bright red trucks to rush to emergencies, and keep the streetlights on at night so you can see your way home. I am the simple but powerful idea that we can do more together than we can alone. My name is Taxes.

I've been around for a very, very long time, but I didn't always look like money. My story starts in ancient Egypt, almost 5,000 years ago, around 3000 BCE. Back then, farmers would give the pharaoh a portion of the grain they grew. That was me. I was a tax paid in food, which was used to feed soldiers and the workers who built the incredible pyramids. Can you imagine a pyramid being built with grain. A few thousand years later, the powerful Roman Empire used me to build their famous long, straight roads and enormous buildings. By the time of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, around the 1st century BCE, people paid me with coins. But using me is a big responsibility, and sometimes people felt it wasn't fair. In England, on June 15th, 1215, a group of powerful nobles made King John sign a famous document called the Magna Carta. A big part of it said the king couldn't just demand money from people whenever he wanted; he had to get their agreement first. This was the beginning of a very important idea: that people should have a say in how I am used.

That idea of fairness sailed across the ocean to America. In the 1700s, colonists grew angry because the King of Great Britain was using me to collect money from them, but he didn't give them any voice in his government. They had a famous saying for it: 'taxation without representation.' This frustration led to a famous event on December 16th, 1773, called the Boston Tea Party, where colonists dumped tea into the harbor to protest one of my rules. Their fight over me and fairness helped spark the American Revolution and create the United States of America. Later, as the country grew, a new rule was made. On February 3rd, 1913, the 16th Amendment was added to the Constitution, creating the modern income tax system that helps the government pay for everything it does for the people.

Today, I am still that community piggy bank, and I help do more amazing things than ever before. I help protect beautiful national parks, from the giant redwood forests to the Grand Canyon. I help fund scientists looking for new medicines and inventors creating new technology. I even help pay for the spaceships that explore our solar system. I am a quiet partner in your life, working behind the scenes. So the next time you visit a museum, cross a strong bridge, or see a police officer keeping your neighborhood safe, you'll know that I am at work. I am the promise we all make to each other: that by each giving a little, we can build a safe, smart, and wonderful world for everyone to share.
