Just want Panchatantra?
Can you hear that? It’s a whisper that has been traveling for thousands of years. It’s the sound of a jungle full of stories. Listen closely, and you can hear a clever monkey chattering in a tree, a brave lion giving a mighty roar, and a wise old turtle sharing a secret. All of my animal friends have special lessons to teach about friendship, being smart, and making good choices. I was born in a land of warm sunshine and ancient temples called India, where wise teachers taught curious princes. I am not just one story, but a whole collection of them, like a treasure chest filled with shiny jewels of wisdom. I am the Panchatantra, and my stories were made to be shared forever.
My story begins a long, long time ago, around the 3rd century BCE. A great king had three sons who were supposed to be learning how to become good rulers, but they found their lessons dreadfully boring. The king was worried. He asked a very wise and clever scholar named Vishnu Sharma to help. Vishnu Sharma knew that the best way to teach an important lesson is to wrap it inside an exciting adventure. So, he created me. I am made of five books, which is why my name begins with ‘Pancha,’ the word for five. Each book is filled with tales, or ‘tantras,’ that teach important ideas about life. Instead of long lectures, the princes got to hear about the adventures of my animal characters. They learned about loyalty from a brave mongoose, about the danger of being foolish from a silly crocodile, and about the importance of thinking before you act from a group of clever birds. The princes loved the stories so much, they learned everything they needed to know without ever feeling bored.

My stories were too wonderful to stay in just one kingdom. They packed their bags and went on a grand adventure all over the world. Around the 6th century CE, many hundreds of years after I was first written, my tales were translated into Persian. From there, I traveled on dusty roads and across sparkling seas to Arabia, Europe, and faraway lands I had only dreamed of. With each new language I learned, my stories might have put on slightly different clothes, but my heart full of wisdom always stayed the same. My tales of clever animals and their adventures even helped inspire other famous story collections you might have heard of. I am still here today, reminding everyone that a good story is a friend that lasts forever. And my biggest secret is that the wisest lessons often come from listening to the adventures of our animal friends.
